Route description: The route is in the Outeniqua Nature Reserve in an area steeped in history, with the Attaquas pass having served as the main highway for ox wagons travelling east and north of Mossel Bay and Cape Town. It was used for nearly two centuries, until the nearby Robinson Pass was completed in 1869.
Originally nature shoed the way - elephants broke the route and were later followed by other animals and their hunters. The remnants of these tracks, along with ruins of a fort, hotel, smithy and toll stations, can be visited.
The main access route is on the northern side of Robinson Pass, about 50km from Oudtshoorn, and can be tackled as a "there and back" option, starting and ending below Robinson Pass. Enjoy a circular route through Bonniedale Farm to the west that comes out on the southern side of Robinson Pass. To book this extra section of the route, contact (044) 695-3175.
