Situated on the coast between Lake Sibaya, Sodwana Bay and Manzengwenya in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Mabibi forms part of the Kosi Bay Coastal Forest Reserve.
From the camp there is a ten minute walk to the beach which provides opportunities for uncrowded angling and snorkelling.The coastal dune forest vegetation is diverse and is home to many bird species. Mabibi is a well known snorkeling site. The bay is bordered by a rocky outcrop with channels that contain beautiful tropical fish and invertebrates.
The sandy beach allows one easy walking and fossicking both north and south.
Birding, fishing, and camping are popular activities.The community that lives around Mabibi is comprised of the descendants of a mixture of the southern Zulu and northern Thonga peoples. These people are unique on the KwaZulu-Natal coast in their harvesting of sea creatures for food.
The Maputaland Marine Reserve was proclaimed in 1986.The marine habitat caters for humpback whales on their northerly migration to Mozambique to calve. Other "big game" include migratory marlin, sailfish and dolphins.
In December the loggerhead and leatherback turtles come onto the beach to lay eggs.
10 Campsites each with barbecue facilities and cold water taps are available as are communal ablutions with hot and cold water.This camp is only accessable to 4X4 vehicles and is totally unsuitable for caravans.The camping tariff is R25 per person per night with a minimum charge of R100. The usual entry charge, community levy and rescue levy apply as does the half price charge for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years of age.For reservations please contact the Officer-in-Charge at Manzengwenya on 035 5748998.
