Drained by the White Mfolozi River, the reserve offers spectacular scenery with highland grassveld on the ridges and valley bushveld in the steep river valleys. Most ridges have spectacular cliffs offering nesting sites to many species of raptors, and the great number of diverse habitats make this reserve a "must" for the bird enthusiast.

Established in 1989, this is one of the newest of KwaZulu-Natal's game reserves. A re-introduction programme is underway with the following large mammals already present. Black rhino, leopard, hyaena, eland, zebra, blue wildebeest, baboon, giraffe, waterbuck, nyala, bushbuck, mountain reedbuck, common reedbuck and a small population of klipspringer.

A few of the larger bird species which may be seen are ground hornbill, crowned eagle, black eagle, white backed vulture, peregrine falcon, lanner falcon, yellow billed kite, brown snake eagle and bateleur. 

The Reserve is situated in the heartland of the Zulu empire of Shaka and Dingaan which adds an additional dimension with many historic sites such as Kwa-Bulawayo, Ulundi and Ungungundlovu only a short drive away.

Walking is permitted at your own risk. 4x4 vehicles are necessary.
Accommodation on the reserve consists of a four bed cottage which may be booked by the public. This has electricity, linen, basic crockery and cutlery, a refrigerator and a two plate electric stove. Basic cooking utensils are also provided.
This accommodation costs R75 per person per night.
Informal picnic areas are also available for day visitors.
