The Boston-Bulwer Beat

Two schools of thought exist on how to derive utmost bliss from the pristine, natural wonderland we call our 'Beat with the Country Heart'. One believes your time amid verdant Drakensberg foothills should be 'Daredevil Days' - the other says 'just relax and be pampered by our unsurpassed peace and hospitality'.

The 'adventurists' would fill your mornings with the likes of abseiling, mountain biking and the ruff 'n' tuff world of a cowboy-in-training, and in the afternoons send you hurtling downstream aboard an inflatable tube or launch you into space strapped into a paraglider or hang-glider. The 'serenists', on the other hand, would suggest nothing more strenuous than teasing fat trout or bass from abundant waters and gently ambling through bird-filled forests, past scenic cascades and alongside soothing creeks and picture- perfect dams.

Both agree on one essential point - you'll always be looking forward to that next treat from our legendary country kitchens. Whether or not you choose to burn zillions of calories per thrilling session of high adventure, our clean and crisp air is guaranteed to rekindle that ravenous appetite so easily dulled in the stress-filled city. And one particular highlight of our calendar goes so far as to boast the most sumptuous, extravagant brunch to be savoured anywhere within our Zulu Kingdom! More of nature’s goodness can be relished during berry picking season, or year-round courtesy of yet another Boston-Bulwer hallmark - our mouth-watering, home-made and additive-free pickles 'n' preserves. Pack them for home in authentic basket-ware, woven as you watch by indigenous local folk skilled in the dexterity of ages. Legacies of a different culture, yet equally time-honoured and fascinating, are the creations of our master gold- and blacksmiths. And considering our complex history, don't be too surprised when you find that 'must-have' antique or piece of collectible memorabilia!

Boston-Bulwer Beat - the two quaint villages plus 40- kilometres between them and a slice of the Dargle Valley - has 'changed hands' several times over the centuries. First inhabitants were the millennia-old San hunter-gathers, who roved freely between nearby southern Drakensberg and the coast while evolving from Early- to Later Stone Age. As the 1800s dawned, however, these tragic people found themselves trapped in the mountains by mighty King Shaka forging his Zulu Empire. In 1837, Boer settlers on their Great Trek from British dominion in the Cape Colony then crossed high passes and laid claim to these tall forests and generous pastures. Already deprived of their natural hunting grounds, the San engaged in rustling Voortrekker cattle and soon received their first taste of gunpowder.

The Boers immediately began logging indigenous trees for their earmarked 'capital' some 60-kilometres northeast, but lost that site to the British, who then also took control of the timberlands. Most prominent of the English sawmill operators were Joseph and Edward Few, whose former home was Boston, Lincolnshire. Bulwer was proclaimed in 1885 and named in honour of the Lieutenant Governor of Natal. For their survival, San hunters now targeted British livestock, but retribution was swift and merciless, and orders to “exterminate like vermin” were executed to the letter. These terrifying scenes are among the San’s now world-famous rock art, viewed in safety and comfort on day trips from our conveniently situated, wide variety of accommodation. And one of our beacons of hospitality is itself a 'living museum', housing more ghosts than you could wave a string of garlic at!

History, tranquility, breathtaking natural beauty and heart- pounding exhilaration – welcome to our unexcelled panorama of delights, where friendly folk await with greetings even warmer than a cosy log fire on a crystalline winter’s night!...
