Paarl Wine Route

Paarl Vintners invites you to explore the world's first 'Red Route'.

As the Paarl region's umbrella association of wine producers, Vintners has embraced Paarl's territorial heritage as one of the most globally prolific sources of fine red wine and has charted a route through which explorers may discover both the delicate secrets and bold celebrities of these historic winelands.

It is true that great 'Red Route' legends such as Roodeberg, stalwart Cabernet Sauvignon, port and a determined focus on Shiraz have long established Paarl's place on the global wine map. Even more exciting is the fact that the Paarl region has again captured the international spotlight with this year's crowning of both a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz as the World's Best Wines as well as securing the award of Winemaker of the Year at Vin Expo 2001.

Perfect micro-climates, ideal soils and a firm red tradition - a medley of blessing, bounty and bold commitment - these are the essential and unique ingredients that have afforded the Paarl region the inalienable and singular claim to being the birthplace of the world's very first 'Red Route'.

Paarl Wine Route
African Terroir

Anura Vineyards

Anura is located between Paarl and Stellenbosch and has been in the Bouma family since 1990, their focus being to grow fruit for other leading wineries.

Ashanti

Beneath the peaks of the Klein Drakenstein mountain range in Paarl, lies the beautiful Ashanti wine estate. Situated on an already famous historical farm, Ashanti consists of 95 ha of the valleys most fertile terroirs and a state-of-the-art modern winery which was completed in 1997.

Avondale

Beautiful Avondale is home to some of the finest wines in South Africa. For over 300 years the vineyards have produced premium grapes, today Avondale is driven by the desire to produce the best wine in the Cape.

Backsberg Estate

Bernheim Winery

Boland Kelder

No connoisseur of Cape wines will argue the fact that Boland Kelder produces one of South Africas top ranges of commercially available wines at extremely good value for money. Boland Kelder also boasts a flagship range which competes with the prime quality wines all over the world.

Coleraine Wines

De Zoete Inval Estate

De Zoete Inval, near Paarl, is a paragon of the Boland’s traditional family estate. The Frater family has been making wine here for more than 115 years and today, brothers Gerard & John Robert Frater, the fifth generation on the estate, continue to produce fine wines.

Domaine Brahms

Fairview Estate

Simon van der Stel issued the first land grant for Fairview in 1693 and the farm belonged to numerous families until 1937 when Charles Back bought it. Fairview already had a reputation for its wines with anecdotes about a local doctor prescribing teaspoonfuls of wine for ailing children.

Frost Vineyards

Kleine Draken

Kleine Draken is the only estate vineyard and winery in South Africa dedicated exclusively to kosher and Mevushal wines.

KWV International (PTY) Ltd

KWV International is a world wide trading company and the leading brand builder and exporter of South African fine wines and brandies to overseas markets.

Laborie Estate

Landskroon Wines

The wine making tradition at Landskroon dates back to the 17th century when the French Huguenots settlers came to the Cape. Among the newcomers was Jacques de Villiers, a wine maker from Niort in France. In 1874 his great-grandson, Paul, bought a portion of the original Landskroon farm that had been granted to a free burger by governor Simon van der Stel in 1692.

Nederburg

Nederburg in Paarl is home to South Africa's most awarded wines and also annually hosts the internationally acclaimed Nederburg Auction, which ranks as one of the top five wine auctions in the world.

Nelsons Creek Wine Estate

Perdeberg Co-op

Rhebokskloof Estate

Rhebokskloof Wine Estate dates back to 1692 when the then governor of the Cape of Good Hope, Simon Van der Stel, gave the land which comprises the Estate to a settler called Dirk Van Schalkwyk as a free grant. Many of the old original buildings on the Estate have been restored to their original splendour.

Seidelberg Wine Estate

Simonsvlei International

As far back as its earliest years of production, Simonsvlei and its wines have been honoured at the highest levels, time and time again. Simonsvlei Winery offers a wide and extremely interesting variety of top quality wines.

Vendome Wine Estate

For ten generations, ever since the Le Roux family came from France in 1692 to settle on Vendôme, fine wines are made from these vineyards. Lying on the bank of the Berg River, Vendôme is a member of the Paarl Vintners Association.

Windmeul Winery

The mill to which Windmeul owes its name must have been the centre of economic activity in the area. This Windmeul was probably the finest in the country.
