History and Culture

Blaauwberg was the gateway to the fertile river valleys and hunting lands up the West Coast. Travelers rested at the springs and outspans on local farms and many of the present roads follow the original wagon trails into the interior. Mamre Mission Station is a step back into another time. This living community has carefully restored many of its old buildings, and retained its country atmosphere. (Old Darling Road (R315) past Atlantis) Tel 576 1117

The second occupation of the Cape was in 1806, where the Battle of Blaauwberg took place. The British invaded and deveated the Dutch garrison just beneath Blaauwberg hill. The oldest known relic of the Portugese in SA is the postal office stone, found at Rietvlei. The original stone is in the South African Museum and you can view a replica at the Blaauwberg Tourism Office. Ysterplaat Airforce Museum is a must for any flying enthusiast.
