 CAMPBELL

Province: Northern Cape
Region: Diamond Fields
Town: Campbell

Campbell
This village on the edge of the Ghaap Plateau was one of the earliest centers of Christianity north of the Orange River. Originally Grootfontein or Knoffelvallei, the town was renamed to honour the Reverend John Campbell, a traveller and missionary who visited the Cape stations of the London Missionary Society in 1831. Renowned for its spectacular dolomite rock formations, high-quality fossils, many springs, karee and wild olive trees, Campbell has a multifaceted history and has been home to San, Koranna and, later, Griqua settlers drawn by the springs. Campbell has also been buffeted by the winds of war. On the 30 June 1878, during the Griqua Rebellion, Campbell was attacked and occupied. During the Anglo-Boer War, the commander of the British forces, Sir Charles Warren, occupied Campbell after the Battle of Fabersput. He built five corrugated iron blockhouses, denying the Boers access to water. And, in 1914, on the farm Linksfontein, near Campbell, Free State, rebel General Edwin A Conroy surrendered to General Louis Botha’s government forces.
