Mooi River 

A farming and textile centre originally named Lawrenceville after the Irish farmer who formalised its settlement during the 1800s, the village took its enduring moniker from the Voortrekker description of its river mooi translates as pretty . In Zulu, however, the river is Mpofana Place of the Eland.

Mooi River forms part of the popular Midlands Meander self-drive arts and crafts route, while all around are opportunities for outdoor recreation. Prior arrangements can be made to visit one of the many prestigious racehorse studs and training establishments in the vicinity, or the Weston Agricultural College Museum which also houses British military artefacts. Back in town, the Rhode House Museum presents a wide variety of local history exhibits depicting formative activities of the area such as polo and dairy farming.

Museums

Main Caves/ Bushman Cave Museum - Giants Castle:
Provides insight into the lives of the San people. It is an open air museum which uses life-like models to depict a typical situation in the daily life of a hunter-gatherer family unit.

There are guides to take visitors on a tour of these caves and the museum.

The Rhode House Museum:

Offers a variety of local history exhibits depicting activities of the area such as dairying and polo. It occupies the former home of Edgar Rhode, a prominent resident who chaired the first town board in 1921.

The Weston Agricultural Museum:

This museum houses photographs and documents depicting the history of the school and district. the college is an old military site, and British army artefacts and buildings are part of the site. Visit by prior arrangement only.

Craft

A significant stretch of the Midlands Meander is located in the Mooi River Region. This popular self-drive arts and crafts route is fun to explore and allows you to shop for handmade goods from woven rugs, leatherwork and ceramics to wooden furniture and jewellery.
