RUSTENBURG
A Voortrekker town, Rustenburg was for some time the capital of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek before the seat was moved to Pretoria. It has granite quarries and platinum and chrome mines in the vicinity, while cotton, tobacco and citrus are the main crops. Situated 112km north-west of Johannesburg, at the foot of the Magaliesberg and with a warm sunny climate, it is a popular spot for weekend breaks. See the Anglican church (1871), the statue of the Voortrekker Girl, the group statue of Voortrekker leaders Pretorius and Potgieter whose reconciliation in 1852 averted a civil war, and the one of Paul Kruger in front of the town hall.
Pop into the museum with its archaeological and local history exhibits, the Paul Bodenstein Park with its duck pond or take a tour of the Tobacco Research Institute at Kroondal. Visit President Kruger's farm, Boekenhoutfontein, on the way to the giant playground of Sun City or go on a circular game-viewing tour of the Rustenburg Nature Reserve. The Rustenburg Ramble includes craft galleries, farm stalls and eating venues.
