Town: Salem

SALEM
Salem is a small village in the Makana Municipality 24 kilometres to the south west of Grahamstown. It was founded by the 1820 settler party led by Hezekiah Sephton who had arrived on the ship the Aurora. A famous incidence took place here during the war of Hintsa when a local resident, Richard Gush, observing that a Xhosa force was preparing to attack the settlement went out and parleyed with the warriors who left the village unmolested.

Salem retains its small village setting, with two historic churches overlooking the cricket pitch. The village is surrounded by farm lands and nature reserves.
