 CAPE TOWN - SOUTH PENINSULA

Province: Western Cape
Region: Cape Town Metropole/ South Peninsula

SOUTH PENINSULA
Towns/Suburbs:
Constantia
Clovelly Fish Hoek Glencairn Hout Bay Kalk Bay Kommetjie Llandudno  Miller's Point
Muizenberg
Noordhoek Scarborough Simon's Town  St James  Wetton Strandfontein  | Mitchell's Plain

An area of great natural beauty, mountains and beaches. One side faces the colder Atlantic Ocean but the strip of coast on the easterly side of False Bay is warmed by the Agulhas Current. Along with a wide choice of safe bathing spots, it is ideal for swimming. The Table Mountain chain, a World Heritage Site, stretches to Cape Point and is criss-crossed by hiking trails. Many of the towns and suburbs on the Cape Flats were built during the apartheid era and are not properly linked or planned. However, a diverse population makes for an exciting, fascinating mix of cultures and practices. Visitors are advised to use guided tours to get the most out of a visit. (24-hour petrol and banking facilities are available throughout the South Peninsula and the Cape Flats.)

Cape Peninsula Nature Reserve

Tourist Information:

Escape the metropolis and lose yourself in a 7 750ha reserve of indigenous flora and fauna, including baboon, bontebok, zebra, springbok, grey rhebok, eland, Cape grysbok, steenbok, grey mongoose and over 150 species of bird. In the reserve, at the end of the Table Mountain chain, is Cape Point, the dramatic and visually awe-inspiring promontory said (erroneously) to divide the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. There are many drives, walks, picnic spots and changing room facilities in the reserve, one of the world's great tourist destinations. A licensed restaurant, featuring spectacular views, feeds appetites whet by fresh air. A great deal of care has been taken to protect the environmental integrity of this natural legacy for generations to come. Admission charged. Tel 780 9100.
