History and Culture
When the Dutch East Indian Company docked at Cape Town in 1652, their commander, Jan van Riebeeck, set forth in building a settlement. As land became scarce, the prospect of land outside the borders of the Cape were looking positive - the land being around the Tygerberg Hills.
These hills appeared to have a spotted appearance, in the midday sun, as that of a leopard's hide. The Dutch not being able to distinguish between a leopard and a tiger, called it Tijgerberghen.
Today the Tygerberg is one of the fastest growing regions within the Greater Cape Town - tucked between the mountains and sea. This region is rich in cultural diversity, hosting Khayelitsha - 2nd largest township in the SA, which is home to some million Capetonians
